Google Shopping product images
Google’s announced 500 × 500 minimum starts on 31 January 2027. Until then, the required size depends on the product category and placement.

Both dimensions must meet the minimum; images may be rectangular. A 500 × 400 image fails the 500 × 500 minimum even though its longest edge reaches 500. The 2027 change covers main image_link and additional_image_link across categories and marketing methods. Google’s current-size troubleshooting; 2027 announcement.
1500 × 1500 or larger is a recommendation. It is separate from the required minimum. When an image is too small, use a larger original: Google advises against enlarging thumbnails. Image-link guidance; product-data specification.
Sources: accepted formats, image limits. Renaming an unsupported file to .jpg does not convert it. The checker inspects the encoded format.
Google requires source metadata for images created with generative AI, including IPTC DigitalSourceType. Re-encoding or removing metadata can erase these declarations. This checker does not verify whether an image was AI-generated or whether its declaration is truthful.

Local size and format checks cannot establish that Google can fetch your published image URL. Check the URL, redirects, robots rules, matching extension, and recrawl status separately. Also review the product variant, overlays, borders, and image quality against the full policy.

The image-link page already shows 500 pixels in its minimum-size section. Its introduction and Google’s dated announcement place enforcement on 31 January 2027; the troubleshooting page retains the earlier category minimums. We keep these time periods separate.
The reviewed sources also disagree on warning rollout: the announcement says 14 April 2026, while troubleshooting says July 2026. The enforcement date is consistent. Warning timing is not used as a file-acceptance rule.
